Most "app cannot find the controller" reports are resolved on the phone. Bluetooth must be on, and on Android the app also needs the Nearby Devices permission (called Location on older Android versions) before the system lets it scan — a denied permission looks exactly like a missing controller. A Bluetooth controller usually holds one connection at a time, so close the app on any other phone that has paired with it before scanning again. For Wi-Fi devices, join the 2.4 GHz network during setup; many controllers cannot see a 5 GHz-only network. And confirm the controller is actually powered — in a car, that usually means the ignition or accessory (ACC) position, not just a parked vehicle.
If the controller still never appears after those checks, the fault has probably left the software, and the site's repair guides continue from exactly this point: vehicle ambient controllers that never show up in a scan, smart lights that keep dropping offline, voice control failing while the app still works, and measuring a controller's outputs to decide whether the controller or the strip has failed.
