Understanding IP Ratings for Outdoor Lighting
IP65 sounds like a promise; it is actually a laboratory sentence with two numbers and a lot of fine print. Reading the code correctly — and knowing where its authority ends — is most of what separates outdoor lighting that lasts five seasons from lighting that fails at the first storm.
Reading the two digits
The first digit rates ingress by solids: 4 means objects over a millimeter (wires, most insects), 5 dust-protected, 6 dust-tight. The second rates water: 4 splashes from any direction, 5 low-pressure jets, 6 powerful jets, 7 temporary immersion to a shallow depth, 8 continuous immersion per the maker's own stated depth. So IP44 is honest patio-cover territory, IP65 handles rain and hose-down, IP67 tolerates a puddle or a brief flood but was never rated to live in one.
Two decoding traps: a higher second digit is not automatically a superset of lower ones (jet resistance and immersion are different physics — some products certify both, marked like IP65/IP67), and an X in either position means untested for that category, not zero.
What the rating describes — and what your install does to it
The certificate applies to a new, closed, correctly assembled sample in a lab. Real installations spend the rating down: every cut end of a 'waterproof' strip is an open door until resealed; every field-fitted connector interrupts the factory jacket; gaskets compress permanently after a few open-close cycles; and cable glands tightened casually wick water along the cable core straight past the housing's proud rating. The honest formula: an installation is only as waterproof as its worst field joint, and the rating on the box describes the parts you did not touch.
The enemies the rating never covered
Three outdoor killers sit entirely outside the IP system. UV: sunlight embrittles PVC jackets and yellows silicone in two to three years; 'IP65' says nothing about it — look for UV-stabilized or outdoor-jacket claims separately. Temperature cycling: daily expansion and contraction breathes humid air into 'sealed' enclosures, condensing into the trapped moisture that corrodes from the inside — vented-but-baffled designs and drip loops manage what sealing alone cannot. Standing water and ice: IP67 tolerates immersion, but freezing water in a fitting's crevices is a mechanical wedge no rating addresses. Placement that sheds water beats a certificate that endures it.
Matching numbers to locations
- Covered porch, eaves, canopies: IP44 suffices with sensible placement
- Exposed walls, pergolas, garden stakes in weather: IP65 as the working default
- Ground-level runs, splash zones, spray-irrigated beds: IP65 minimum with drainage thinking, IP67 where pooling is plausible
- In or under water features: IP68 products with the maker's stated depth, and low-voltage design as the second layer of safety
- Anywhere at all: field joints resealed to the same standard as the jacket, connectors aimed down, drip loops before every entry
Buying and installing to the real standard
Treat the IP number as an entry ticket, then interrogate the rest: UV-stability of the jacket, gasket material at connectors, whether the maker sells matching sealed accessories (end caps, glands, junction shells) — a product line with no sealing accessories expects you to improvise its weakest points. Then install as if the rating were one class lower than printed: shed water rather than resist it, seal every field cut the day it is made, and put mains-fed circuits behind residual-current protection so the eventual leak is a trip, not an event. The rating buys margin; the installation decides whether the margin survives.
Reading a rating against its accessories
Manufacturers signal their seriousness through the accessories they sell rather than the digits they print. A product line offering matched end caps, cable glands, sealed junction shells and replacement gaskets expects field assembly and has engineered for it. A line offering only the fixture expects the installer to improvise at exactly the points where ratings are lost.
The same logic applies to spare parts over time: outdoor lighting is a maintained system, and gaskets are consumables. Buying into a range with published spares turns the third season's inspection into a parts order instead of a replacement purchase — an argument the initial price comparison rarely surfaces.
