Color Temperature, CRI, and Lumens Explained
Every lighting box prints the same three specifications, and most purchases go wrong by reading only one. Brightness, color temperature and color rendering are independent axes — a bulb can score well on any two and still be wrong for the room.
Lumens: quantity, decoupled from watts
Lumens measure emitted light; watts measure consumed power. LED efficiency broke the old wattage shorthand — a 10 W LED spans anywhere from 600 to 1100 lumens depending on quality — so lumens are the only honest quantity figure. Anchors help: the remembered '60-watt bulb' is roughly 800 lm; a living room's total ambient target sits around 100–200 lm per square meter, task areas higher, bedrooms lower.
The trap is equivalence marketing: '100 W equivalent' claims stretch generously. Read the lumen number itself, and for dimmable fixtures note that the spec describes full output — a fixture bought exactly at target has no headroom to dim into.
CCT: the temperature of white
Correlated color temperature runs on the Kelvin scale backwards from intuition: 2700 K is warm candlelight-adjacent, 4000 K neutral, 6500 K cool daylight-blue. The choice is functional as much as aesthetic — warm light reads as evening and rest, cool light as alertness and scrutiny, which is why bedrooms and dining default 2700–3000 K, kitchens and workshops 4000 K, and mixed choices within one visual field read as a mistake rather than variety.
Two traps. Marketing names ('soft white', 'natural') map inconsistently across brands — trust only the Kelvin number. And matching the number is not the whole story across products: the same nominal 2700 K from two makers can sit visibly apart in tint, which is the color-consistency problem the companion note below addresses.
CRI: whether colors survive the light
The color rendering index scores how faithfully a source reveals colors against a reference, out of 100. At 80 — the commodity floor — most things look acceptable and reds quietly die; at 90+, skin, wood, food and fabric render honestly. The difference is invisible on the box and obvious in the bathroom mirror. For any room where color judgment matters — kitchens, dressing areas, art walls, anywhere faces are seen — 90 is the practical floor, and the incremental cost has collapsed to near zero.
CRI's own fine print: the headline number averages pastel samples and can hide weak deep-red rendering; better datasheets publish R9 (saturated red) separately, and a strong R9 is the quiet marker of a maker doing color seriously.
Reading all three together
The three axes are independent, so specify in order of consequence: choose CCT per room function first (it is the hardest to live with when wrong), set the CRI floor at 90 where people and food are seen, then buy enough lumens for the space with dimming headroom. A fixture failing any one axis fails the room — 5000 lm of 6500 K CRI-80 light is a brilliant way to make a living room feel like a loading dock.

- CRI: 90+ where color or faces matter; R9 published is a good sign in itself
- Consistency: same brand and line within a room; note batch when buying multiples
Color consistency: the fourth number
Three specifications describe a single lamp; a fourth describes a group. Color consistency — quantified as SDCM or MacAdam steps — measures how tightly a batch clusters around its nominal color point. At SDCM 5 and above, two nominally identical 2700 K bulbs side by side can read visibly different, one pinkish and one greenish; at 3 or below they match.
The practical consequences are ordinary and annoying: a replacement bulb bought a year later that ruins a previously uniform row, or six downlights from one order where one reads cooler than its neighbors. Two habits contain it — buy all fixtures for one visual field from a single line and batch, and keep two spares from that batch in a drawer. Where the specification is published at all, SDCM 3 or better is worth the small premium in any room where fixtures appear in groups.
